SRH Sign RS Ambrish as Shivam Mavi Replacement in IPL 2026

SRH Sign RS Ambrish as Injury Replacement

Sunrisers Hyderabad have acted swiftly to strengthen their squad by signing 18-year-old all-rounder RS Ambrish as a mid-season replacement for the injured Shivam Mavi. The fast bowler has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 with a groin injury, prompting the franchise to bring in one of India’s most promising young talents.

The IPL confirmed that Ambrish, a right-arm medium pacer who can also bat left-handed, joins the squad for a fee of 30 lakh rupees. While the amount may appear modest, the opportunity represents a major step forward in the teenager’s career. Joining one of the most in-form teams in the tournament gives him the perfect platform to learn and grow at the highest level.

U19 World Cup Hero Earns His Shot

Ambrish comes into the IPL on the back of an impressive showing at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026. He finished as India’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 11 wickets, playing a key role in their title-winning campaign.

The tournament, held across Zimbabwe and Namibia, showcased his ability to swing the ball and generate movement off the pitch. His versatility as a lower-order batter further increased his value, making him one of the standout performers in the squad.

Such performances have clearly caught the attention of IPL franchises, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have moved quickly to secure his services before other opportunities emerged.

Early Signs in Domestic Cricket

Although still at the beginning of his professional journey, Ambrish has already taken his first steps in domestic cricket. The Chennai-born player made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in October 2025 against Jharkhand.

In his limited appearances so far, he has picked up two wickets and contributed 43 runs with the bat. While these numbers are based on a small sample size, they indicate a player with the potential to adapt to higher levels of competition. His transition from age-group cricket to the senior game appears to be progressing steadily.

SRH Continue to Back Young Talent

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s decision to sign Ambrish reflects a clear strategy this season. Rather than turning to an experienced international replacement, the franchise has chosen to invest in young Indian talent.

This approach has already paid dividends. Players like Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain have stepped up in important moments, contributing to SRH’s strong run of form. The team’s five-match winning streak has been built not just on star performers but also on emerging players who have seized their opportunities.

By adding Ambrish to the squad, SRH are continuing this trend, focusing on long-term development while maintaining competitive balance.

Coping With Mavi’s Absence

The loss of Shivam Mavi is certainly a setback, but it comes at a time when Sunrisers Hyderabad are well positioned in the tournament. With 12 points from nine matches and sitting comfortably in the top three, the team has enough depth to manage the absence.

Mavi, who was signed at his base price, was not a guaranteed starter in every match. As a result, the overall impact on team balance is limited. This has allowed SRH to take a calculated risk by bringing in a young and relatively inexperienced player.

A Big Opportunity for Ambrish

For RS Ambrish, this move represents a significant milestone. Being part of an IPL squad offers exposure to top-level training, experienced international players, and high-pressure match environments. Even if immediate playing opportunities are limited, the learning experience alone can be invaluable.

The contrast with other teams’ strategies is also notable. Earlier in the season, Mumbai Indians signed experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj as a replacement for Mitchell Santner. While that move prioritized experience, SRH have chosen a path focused on future potential.

What Lies Ahead

Sunrisers Hyderabad are set to face Kolkata Knight Riders in Hyderabad, and while Ambrish is unlikely to feature immediately, his presence adds depth to an already strong bowling unit. SRH’s attack has been particularly effective in the death overs this season, and adding another pace option only strengthens their resources.

As the tournament progresses, opportunities could arise for the young all-rounder. If he gets his chance, it will be a moment to watch closely, as IPL 2026 could mark the beginning of a promising career at the highest level.
