Shubman Gill Breaks Virat Kohli’s IPL Record

A Night to Remember

Few players in IPL history have been as consistently brilliant as Shubman Gill, and on Friday night in Jaipur, he added another chapter to his growing legacy. Despite twisting his ankle midway through his innings and having to call the physio out twice, Gill continued to bat and went on to score a stunning 84 off 44 balls. In doing so, he became only the fourth player in IPL history to score 400 or more runs in seven consecutive seasons, a milestone even the great Virat Kohli never reached.

The Record That Places Him in Rare Company

Seven consecutive IPL seasons with 400-plus runs. That is now Gill’s achievement, covering the years 2020 through 2026. The only other players to have done this are Suresh Raina, David Warner, and Shikhar Dhawan, all legends of the format. Kohli, widely regarded as one of the greatest IPL batters ever, stopped at six. It may sound like a statistical curiosity, but what it actually shows is the sheer, relentless consistency that Gill brings to the tournament year after year, regardless of team form, conditions, or pressure.

What Made This Knock Special

This was not just another half-century in a comfortable chase or a flat batting surface. Gill opened the batting with the new ball on a surface that had something in it for pace, faced down two top-class fast bowlers in Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger, and then proceeded to take the game away from Rajasthan with a blend of pure timing, placement, and power hitting. Nine fours and three sixes in 44 balls at a strike rate of 190.91 tells you everything about the tempo of the knock.

Playing Through Pain at the Highest Level

What elevated this performance beyond the numbers was the courage involved. After twisting his ankle while turning for a quick single in the ninth over, Gill was clearly in pain. He called for the physio twice. On both occasions, the medical team appeared to urge him off the field. Gill refused and carried on. He later admitted after the match that he twisted his ankle while running but said the pain had settled down after about thirty minutes of continued play. For a player who is India’s primary red-ball captain and has a full international schedule ahead, staying on despite this risk showed tremendous commitment to his team.

The Gill-Sudharsan Partnership That Keeps Rewriting History

Gill’s opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan is fast becoming one of the iconic combinations in IPL history. Their 118-run stand against Rajasthan was their ninth century partnership together in the IPL, equalling the record held jointly by Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle for most 100-plus opening stands in the competition. There is still time in the season, and should they add one more before the league stage ends, they will stand alone at the top of this particular list.

The Captain Who Leads From the Front

Beyond the batting records, Gill’s value to this Gujarat Titans squad is about leadership. He won the toss, set the tone with his own batting, and backed his bowlers completely throughout the second innings. When Rashid Khan and Jason Holder were dismantling the Rajasthan middle and lower order, Gill was orchestrating it from slip with the calm of a captain who knows exactly what his team is capable of. That trust between captain and players was visible from ball one of the second innings.

What Lies Ahead for Gill and GT

Gill ends this match with 462 runs in 10 innings this season at an average of 46.2. With four league games still remaining and GT now tied at the top of the table with Sunrisers Hyderabad, the pressure will only build. But if his performance against Rajasthan is anything to go by, Shubman Gill does not crumble when things get tough. He bats through the pain and breaks records while doing it. Gujarat Titans look like a genuine title contender, and their captain is the biggest reason why.

The Season That Silences the Critics

Every year, critics question whether Shubman Gill is more of an accumulator than a true IPL match-winner. Every year, he answers. In 2026, he has done it louder than ever scoring 400-plus runs for a seventh straight IPL season while captaining Gujarat Titans to the top of the table. Doing it all while carrying an ankle injury has only strengthened his case as one of the league’s best batters. The records will stand out, but it is Gill’s resilience and calm determination through pain that will define this season.
