The Weight of Being Champions
Defending an IPL title is one of the hardest things a franchise can do. The opposition studies you harder, the bowlers have more data on your batters, and the pressure that comes with being the team everyone wants to beat is a very different pressure from being the hungry team chasing glory. KKR know this feeling all too well in IPL 2026. Last season’s champions are finding it much harder to replicate that form, and the cracks that were always there are now becoming difficult to ignore.
What Went Right Last Season That Is Missing Now
KKR‘s IPL 2025 title win was built on three things: explosive opening batting, a varied bowling attack that bowled intelligently in all phases, and a captain in Shreyas Iyer who was calm and calculated under pressure. This season, all three of those foundations have wobbled at different points. The opening partnership has not produced the consistent runs that gave KKR such a foundation last year. The bowling attack has leaked runs in the middle overs more frequently, and while individual performances have been strong, the collective efficiency has dipped. And the captaincy decisions, while not dramatically wrong, have not had the same clinical feel as last season.
The Batting Order Looks Different Under Pressure
One pattern that has emerged across multiple KKR matches this season is how quickly their middle order collapses once the top three are back in the dugout. Last year, even when they lost an early wicket, someone down the order would bail them out. This season, when the top order goes cheaply, the team looks like they do not have a plan B. Finn Allen has produced some brilliant performances, and his century against DC showed what he is capable of, but he cannot do it alone every game. The team needs more contributions from the batters in positions four through six, and so far, those have been inconsistent.
The Bowling Has Not Found Its 2025 Form
Varun Chakravarthy was almost unplayable at times last season, and his mystery spin was a major weapon for KKR. This season, batters seem to have found answers for him more frequently. He is still taking wickets, still making batting difficult, but the fear factor has reduced. Andre Russell has continued to bowl his aggressive spells, but relying on him too heavily in the death overs is a risk, given how much they need him to fire with the bat in the lower middle order. The pace bowling has been decent without being exceptional, and in IPL 2026, where batting lineups are deeper than ever, decent without exceptional is often not enough.
Can They Still Make the Playoffs
KKR are not out of the tournament. Their playoff hopes are still alive, and a three-match winning run could change everything. The talent in the squad is not in question. This is a group of players who won the title twelve months ago, and that experience does not just disappear. But the window for them to turn things around is getting smaller, and the teams above them in the table are not waiting around for KKR to find their rhythm. Every game from this point is essentially a knockout match, and KKR will need to start playing like that immediately.
The Leadership Question
There is a quiet conversation happening around KKR’s leadership this season. Iyer has had moments of brilliance with the bat but has also had some frustrating dismissals when the team needed him most. As captain, his bowling changes and field placements have occasionally been questioned by analysts. This is not to say he is having a poor captaincy season, but the standards he set last year were extremely high, and living up to them while also managing a team that is not performing at its best is an enormous challenge. KKR need their captain to have a couple of defining performances in the next few matches.
The IPL Title Is a Double-Edged Trophy
Winning the IPL is everything. But defending it is a different beast altogether. KKR will know this season is not yet over, and they have enough quality to still make a run deep into the tournament. But the comfortable, confident cricket they played last year has not been there consistently, and finding it again under pressure is the real test of this squad’s character.
