The IPL 2026 playoff race has entered its most intense phase after Gujarat Titans crushed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 82 runs in Match 56 on May 12. With the league stage nearing its conclusion, the battle for the top four is becoming tighter with every passing game.
Two teams have already been eliminated, but eight franchises are still mathematically alive in the race for the remaining playoff spots. With only a handful of matches left, every point, wicket, and net run rate swing could decide who survives and who falls short.
Mumbai Indians and LSG Officially Eliminated
Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are the only two sides officially knocked out of IPL 2026 so far.
Mumbai’s elimination was confirmed after their dramatic two-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on May 10. The loss ended a disappointing campaign for the five-time champions, who never managed to build consistency throughout the tournament.
Lucknow Super Giants had already slipped out of contention earlier after struggling to put together consecutive wins. Injuries, inconsistent bowling performances, and middle-order collapses ultimately cost them a place in the playoff race.
For both teams, the focus now shifts toward rebuilding ahead of IPL 2027.
Gujarat Titans Lead the Charge
At the top of the table, Gujarat Titans are now in the strongest position of any side in the competition. GT currently sit first with 16 points from 12 matches and are virtually guaranteed a place in the playoffs.
More importantly, Gujarat still have an excellent chance of finishing inside the top two, which would secure the valuable double chance in the knockout rounds. Their remaining fixtures against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings could determine whether they finish as league leaders.
GT’s recent form has made them look like the most balanced side in the tournament. Their batting has recovered from difficult situations consistently, while their bowling attack has dominated opponents in both the powerplay and death overs.
After winning five matches in a row, Gujarat have all the momentum at exactly the right time.
RCB and SRH Remain in Strong Positions
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are currently second on the table with 14 points from 11 matches and arguably hold the best overall playoff position outside GT. Their net run rate of +1.103 is the highest in the league, which could become crucial if teams finish level on points.
RCB have also started winning tight games consistently, something that has often separated championship contenders from the rest of the field in previous IPL seasons. With form, confidence, and momentum on their side, Bengaluru look well placed to secure qualification.
Despite their crushing defeat against Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad remain third with 14 points from 12 matches. However, their margin for error has now become smaller.
SRH likely need at least one more victory from their remaining fixtures to confirm qualification safely. Another heavy defeat could also damage their net run rate, adding extra pressure to an already tense finish.
Still, Hyderabad remain one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament when their aggressive top order clicks.
PBKS, CSK, and RR Still Fighting
Punjab Kings currently occupy fourth place with 13 points from 11 games, but their recent form has created concern. PBKS have now lost four consecutive matches, and momentum has completely shifted away from them at the worst possible stage of the season.
Their playoff hopes remain alive, but they cannot afford many more mistakes.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals both remain firmly in contention with 12 points each. As always, Chennai’s experience in high-pressure situations makes them a dangerous team late in the tournament, especially if their spin attack finds rhythm.
Rajasthan, meanwhile, continue to rely heavily on their explosive batting lineup and ability to chase under pressure.
Both teams know that one strong winning streak could completely transform the table in the final week of the league phase.
KKR Need a Near-Perfect Finish
Among the teams still alive, Kolkata Knight Riders face perhaps the toughest challenge. KKR currently sit seventh with only nine points and need an exceptional finish to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Even if they win their remaining matches, they may still depend on other results going their way. Net run rate could also become a major factor, meaning KKR not only need victories but convincing ones.
The pressure is now enormous, and every remaining game effectively becomes a knockout match for them.
Net Run Rate Could Decide Everything
With 14 league matches still remaining, the playoff race is far from settled. Several teams are separated by only a few points, which means the standings could change dramatically within just a couple of days.
At this stage of the tournament, net run rate becomes almost as important as points themselves. One heavy defeat or one dominant win could completely reshape the table.
Different teams also carry different strengths into the final stretch. Punjab Kings continue to rely heavily on Yuzvendra Chahal’s impact with the ball, Chennai’s spin unit remains a major weapon in pressure games, and Gujarat Titans currently look unstoppable with both bat and ball.
The final week of IPL 2026 is shaping up to be one of the closest and most competitive playoff races the league has seen in years.
