Mitchell Marsh Laughs Off Ashes Talk as Australia Focuses on India ODI Challenge

Australia’s stand-in ODI captain Mitchell Marsh brushed off questions about a potential Ashes return, saying his focus is firmly on the upcoming ODI series against India. Marsh, who leads the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, responded humorously when asked if he was eyeing a Test comeback.

“I’ve got tickets to day one and two [of the Ashes]. Haven’t told my wife yet — that’s about all the thought I’ve given it,” Marsh joked.

The comment came as Australia prepared for their three-match ODI series against India — a crucial step toward defending their 2027 World Cup title. Despite the Ashes buzz dominating Australian cricket, Marsh stressed that this series presents an important opportunity to rebuild consistency in the 50-over format.

Australia has been inconsistent in ODIs since their 2023 World Cup triumph and faces this series without key players Cameron Green, Alex Carey, and Josh Inglis, all sidelined due to injury or domestic commitments. Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Owen are set to make their ODI debuts, while Josh Philippe returns after four years.

“We’ve seen many players get chances in white-ball cricket recently,” Marsh said. “The key is giving them clarity about their roles and letting them enjoy playing for Australia.”

With several retirements — including Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis — Australia’s batting order is undergoing a transition. Matt Short, known for his domestic form, is expected to bat at No. 3 behind Marsh and Travis Head, who have formed a solid opening pair.

Australia’s form slump, including a 2-1 series loss to South Africa, has increased pressure to perform against top-ranked India, led by Shubman Gill. The visitors still feature Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, adding star power to the contest.

“They’re legends of the game,” Marsh said. “Virat is probably the best chaser ever in ODIs. You can see from the ticket sales that fans are excited to watch them play.”

Over 50,000 fans are expected at Perth’s Optus Stadium, where both teams will look to start strong in what Marsh predicts will be a high-scoring battle.

“It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere. Getting through the first 10 overs will be key for both teams,” Marsh noted.

As the Ashes series looms, Australia will be looking to fine-tune their combinations and build momentum against a strong Indian side.
