Aman Sehrawat WFI Ban Reconsideration: Wrestler Pleads for Leniency After Admitting Weight-Miss Mistake

Aman Sehrawat WFI ban reconsideration plea made headlines as the Paris Olympics bronze medallist wrestler sought mercy from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The 22-year-old admitted his mistake in failing to make weight at the World Championships in Zagreb and requested the federation to review its one-year suspension starting September 23 2025. Sehrawat said he would personally meet WFI president Sanjay Singh to appeal for leniency, calling it his “first mistake.”

Background of the Ban

In a letter dated September 23 2025, the WFI issued a show-cause notice to Sehrawat, asking for an explanation regarding his weight lapse. His reply, submitted on September 29, was deemed unsatisfactory by the WFI disciplinary committee, leading to a one-year suspension from all wrestling activities. Sehrawat was disqualified at Zagreb after exceeding the 57 kg limit by 1.7 kg.

Sehrawat’s Explanation and Admission

Speaking during an Indian Olympic Association (IOA) felicitation ceremony, Sehrawat admitted he misjudged his weight cut, explaining he suffered a sudden stomach ache a day before weigh-in. “I had 600 grams left to reduce,” he said, “but the pain stopped me.” Despite medication, his condition did not improve, causing him to miss weight for the first time in his career. He said, “It was my first mistake, and I won’t repeat it.”

Career Impact and Future Goals

The ban could significantly affect Sehrawat’s preparation for the 2026 Asian Games and the World Championships, both key targets for the wrestler. Sehrawat said he will continue training and aims to compete at the Asian Championships in April 2026 after recovering from a previous injury. “I was preparing for gold,” he said. “I beat last year’s world champion 10-0 — everything was going well until this happened.”

WFI’s Position and Next Steps

The WFI has yet to comment on whether it will reconsider the ban. Officials previously said the decision was taken after due process and that discipline and professionalism remain critical for national athletes. Sehrawat, however, remains hopeful of a positive response and may also seek help from the Sports Ministry. “We will make requests. A one-year ban affects my whole career,” he said.

Conclusion: A Plea for Redemption

Sehrawat’s case underscores the fine line between discipline and compassion in elite sports. By admitting his lapse and pledging improvement, the young wrestler hopes for forgiveness from the WFI. Whether the federation softens its stance or upholds the ban will shape the next phase of his promising career.
