Liverpool Crisis After Man City Defeat: Roy Keane Calls Team ‘Weak’

Liverpool crisis after Man City defeat — that’s how Roy Keane described the champions’ current form, calling their display “weak” and “soft” following a 3-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium. The defeat marks Liverpool’s fifth Premier League loss in 11 games and seventh in 10 across all competitions, leaving them eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

Keane: ‘It Has to Be a Crisis for Liverpool’

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane said: “I think it is crisis time for Liverpool. It’s okay to lose to Man City – it’s a tough place to go – but to lose seven in 10, five league losses already, it has to be a crisis for a club like Liverpool.”

Keane criticised the team’s energy and leadership, saying they looked “really weak” and “lacked intensity.” He added that the substitutes “looked soft” and that manager Arne Slot’s post-match optimism was misplaced: “It’s easy to play well when the game’s already over.”

Man City Dominate as Liverpool Struggle

Goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku secured a dominant victory for Pep Guardiola’s side, who also saw Haaland miss a penalty. City’s pace, physicality, and pressing overwhelmed Liverpool, who struggled to maintain shape and tempo. The defeat further highlights the gap between the two clubs this season, with City now emerging as Arsenal’s main title challengers.

Neville: ‘Liverpool Were There to Be Beaten’

Fellow pundit Gary Neville echoed Keane’s criticism, saying Liverpool “played without confidence” and “looked leggy and sluggish.” On commentary, he observed: “Sometimes you can tell when a team is there to be beaten. Liverpool’s legs are gone. They cannot get out.”

After Gonzalez’s strike deflected off Virgil van Dijk, Neville added: “Van Dijk just lets it hit him. Really strange. They’ve lost every battle and it’s worrying.”

Liverpool’s Season in Decline

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool’s inconsistent form has raised major concerns. Once known for their relentless pressing and high energy, the team has looked disjointed and tired. Keane suggested the players lack belief and physical sharpness: “There was a lack of intensity, a lack of energy.”

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville added: “It was one of the worst Liverpool performances I’ve seen in a long time. It’s like they didn’t know what to do. They’ve hit high standards before, but they’re nowhere near right now.”

What’s Next for the Reds?

With Arsenal and Manchester City setting the pace, Liverpool must rediscover their identity quickly to avoid slipping further behind. Slot’s tactical system and squad rotation have faced scrutiny, and with defensive errors and lack of intensity becoming regular issues, pressure is mounting on the Dutch coach.

As Keane summed it up: “This is Liverpool we’re talking about. You don’t lose five league games in 11 and pretend it’s fine. It’s a crisis.”
