ISL 2026 Returns With New Format, Blockbuster Start

Indian Super League (ISL) 2026 has returned after months of uncertainty, administrative reshuffles, and speculation, kicking off in a leaner, shorter format with high stakes from day one. The new edition features 14 teams in a single round-robin format, with each team playing 13 matches over three months. The team topping the table at the end will be crowned champion, eliminating traditional playoffs and second-leg matches.

ISL 2026 Returns Amid Chaos

After months of doubts over its continuity, the Indian Super League 2026 is back with a compressed, high-stakes format. Delayed by nearly four months, the tournament now features 14 teams competing in a single round-robin system. The AIFF opted for this format due to limited calendar time, ensuring that every match counts towards determining the champion.

Opening Fixtures Promise Excitement

The season kicks off with defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant hosting Kerala Blasters FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday at 5 PM. The clash pits two of Indian football’s largest fan bases against each other, promising a high-voltage opener. Later in the evening, newly-promoted Inter Kashi will face Super Cup champions FC Goa in an away fixture at 7:30 PM.

Without playoffs or second legs, every game in the 91-match season carries immense importance, with consistency set to be the key determinant of the champion.

Administrative Changes and Pre-Season Challenges

The league’s continuity had been in question after Football Sports Development Limited, which ran the ISL since 2014, exited following the conclusion of its Master Rights Agreement with AIFF. The Union Sports Ministry’s intervention enabled the AIFF to secure a new arrangement, allowing the season to proceed.

Despite clarity on governance, uncertainties remain. Several teams are finalizing squads, and a few may start the season without foreign signings. Additionally, Odisha FC vs Punjab FC, originally scheduled for February 16, has been postponed due to Odisha’s pending confirmation of their home venue.

Broadcast plans were also confirmed late, with all matches now streamed on FanCode and telecast on Sony Sports Ten 2, according to AIFF.

Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters Eye Early Advantage

Mohun Bagan enters the season as favorites, retaining the core of last year’s title-winning squad. Head coach Sergio Lobera emphasized focus and solutions over excuses, stating, “It will be a difficult season for everyone, but finally, this is the moment to try and find solutions and not find excuses.” Forward Dimi Petratos added, “We have the best squad in the country and we have trained well and we have come here to win.”

Kerala Blasters, meanwhile, have strengthened key positions with new foreign signings. Head coach David Catala expressed optimism, acknowledging Mohun Bagan’s strength but maintaining, “They are defending champions and best team in the country but in football everything is possible. We are focused on tomorrow’s game and we will try to get all three points.”

FC Goa vs Inter Kashi: Debutants Seek Impact

FC Goa, with competitive exposure this season, aims to leverage their rhythm against newly-promoted Inter Kashi. Head coach Manolo Marquez expects a tight contest, describing it as “a difficult and very equal game for both teams.”

Inter Kashi, promoted after winning the I-League, are eager to make a mark in their maiden ISL campaign. Head coach Antonio Habas stressed the importance of a strong start: “It’s very important to create your first impression. We have to do really good in our first ISL season.”

Conclusion: A New Era of High-Stakes Football

The 2026 ISL season begins with unpredictability, a condensed format, and enormous stakes. With defending champions, ambitious newcomers, and passionate fan bases, the league promises intense matches from the first whistle. Clubs must maintain consistency throughout, as there are no second chances in this truncated, high-pressure edition. Fans can expect an action-packed football spectacle across every round of the league.
