CSK Injury Crisis Ahead of SRH Clash

Chennai Super Kings Are Running Out of Fit Bowlers

Chennai Super Kings are facing one of their most difficult periods in recent memory as their injury list keeps growing at the worst possible time. With a crucial clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, CSK head into this match severely depleted and searching for answers.

Khaleel Ahmed Ruled Out for the Season

The biggest blow came when left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed was officially ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026. He suffered a grade 2 quadriceps tear along with a stretch injury to his right rectus femoris tendon during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14. Doctors also confirmed a complete tear of the direct head of the muscle. The recovery timeline is a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks, which effectively ends his participation in this year’s tournament.

Khaleel had played five matches this season, taking just two wickets at an economy of 8.67. He had been far more impactful in previous years and was counted on to deliver breakthroughs in the powerplay. His absence removes one of CSK’s most experienced left-arm options from their bowling attack.

The Deepening Wound List

Khaleel is not the only bowler CSK have lost. Earlier in the season, Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis was ruled out due to injury. CSK subsequently signed Spencer Johnson as his replacement, though Johnson is expected to join the squad only next week. That means CSK will once again be working without their full complement of pace resources against SRH.

Then there is MS Dhoni. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper batter is still not fit to play. Reports suggest he is targeting a return against Mumbai Indians on April 23, but for now CSK’s fans continue to wait and watch. Young batter Dewald Brevis missed the early part of the season with a side strain but has recently returned, which provides at least one positive development for the franchise.

Former CSK off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has publicly questioned the team’s injury management this season, asking how so many players are getting hurt in a single campaign. His comments have sparked debate among fans and analysts about whether CSK’s medical setup needs to be looked at more closely.

Who Steps Up Against SRH

With the bowling unit short on numbers, CSK will likely turn to Mukesh Choudhary to fill part of the gap left by Khaleel. Gurjapneet Singh and Anshul Kamboj are also options that the team management may look at. Ruturaj Gaikwad and the top order will need to put up a big total to give the bowlers something to defend, as the attack is clearly not at full strength.

CSK still have quality in their lineup. Gaikwad has been building form, Devdutt Padikkal has been sharp, and the middle order has enough firepower. But without Dhoni and with multiple bowlers either unavailable or untested, the pressure on the batting unit is enormous.

SRH Advantage

Sunrisers Hyderabad will be aware of CSK’s situation going into this game. Ishan Kishan has been leading the side well in the absence of Pat Cummins, and SRH found a brilliant pair of new seamers in Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, who combined for eight wickets against Rajasthan Royals in their previous match. Playing at home, SRH will back themselves to exploit a weakened CSK bowling attack.

For CSK, the next two weeks are critical. Spencer Johnson’s arrival will help, but the team needs to find a way to be competitive now. Their season depends on how quickly they can adapt to a fast-changing squad situation.
