Virat Kohli Becomes First IPL Batter to Hit 800 Fours

A Record That May Never Be Broken

On April 24 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli added yet another milestone to his legendary IPL career. Representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Gujarat Titans, Kohli became the first batter in IPL history to reach 800 boundaries. The landmark came during a superb innings of 81 off 44 balls, guiding RCB to a thrilling chase of 206 with seven balls to spare.

The achievement highlighted not just his longevity but his consistency across nearly two decades in the tournament. In a format often dominated by power-hitting, Kohli’s mastery of placement and timing continues to set him apart.

Sudharsan’s Century Sets the Platform

Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted an imposing total of 205 for 3, thanks largely to a sensational century from Sai Sudharsan. The left-hander looked in complete control from the outset, punishing loose deliveries and rotating strike efficiently.

His innings blended elegance with aggression, as he found gaps effortlessly and accelerated at the right moments. Supported by contributions from the middle order, Sudharsan’s knock ensured GT had a strong total to defend on a batting-friendly Bengaluru surface.

Kohli Silences Any Doubters

Chasing a target above 200 demands both intent and composure, and Kohli delivered both in abundance. Despite being dropped on the very first ball he faced, he quickly found rhythm and began dictating terms to the bowlers.

Facing Kagiso Rabada early in the innings, Kohli struck a boundary toward long-on his 800th four in IPL history. The moment marked a historic achievement, underlining his dominance as one of the finest batters the league has ever seen.

Kohli continued to build on that start, finishing with 81 runs off 44 deliveries, including eight fours and four sixes. During the innings, he also entered the exclusive 300-sixes club, joining Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma. Notably, Kohli remains the only player to hit 300 sixes for a single IPL franchise, further emphasizing his long-standing association with RCB.

Padikkal and Krunal Seal the Chase

Kohli’s brilliance was well supported by Devdutt Padikkal, who played an explosive knock of 55 off just 27 balls. The pair stitched together a crucial 115-run partnership for the second wicket, putting RCB firmly on track in the chase.

However, a brief wobble saw RCB slip to 175 for 5 after both set batters were dismissed in quick succession. At that stage, the pressure shifted slightly back onto the chasing side.

Krunal Pandya stepped up with a composed finish, scoring an unbeaten 23 off 12 balls. His calculated aggression in the closing overs, particularly a 15-run burst in the 18th over, effectively sealed the match. Tim David added the finishing touches as RCB reached 206 for 5 in 18.5 overs.

The victory propelled RCB to second place on the IPL 2026 points table, strengthening their push toward the playoffs.

Where Kohli Stands in IPL History

With this performance, Kohli extended his record to 807 fours in 274 IPL matches, placing him comfortably ahead of his closest rivals. Shikhar Dhawan sits second with 768 boundaries, followed by David Warner with 663 and Rohit Sharma with 653.

The gap between Kohli and the rest highlights the sheer scale of his achievement. No other active batter currently appears close to challenging this record, making it one that could stand for years to come.

In addition to the boundary milestone, Kohli continued his march toward 9,000 IPL runs. Entering the match needing just over 90 runs to reach the landmark, his innings brought him within touching distance. He also achieved another global feat by becoming the first batter to score 10,000 T20 runs on Indian soil.

What the Record Means

At 37, Kohli remains the heartbeat of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and a defining figure in T20 cricket. His ability to consistently deliver under pressure, adapt to match situations, and build innings with precision is unmatched.

The 800-boundary milestone is not just a number it represents 19 seasons of sustained excellence, discipline, and evolution. In an era where brute force often dominates, Kohli’s classical approach continues to thrive, proving that timing and technique still hold immense value.

With RCB sitting strong on the points table and Kohli in prime form, their ambitions for another successful IPL campaign look increasingly realistic.
