Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Rewrites Six-Hitting Records

The Teenager Who Keeps Breaking Things

If there is one player in IPL 2026 who has made even the most experienced watchers look up from their phones, it is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At just 15 years old, the Rajasthan Royals opener has spent the season not just playing cricket but rewriting it. His latest achievement came against Gujarat Titans on Friday night when, despite Rajasthan losing heavily, he scored 36 off just 16 balls and in the process set a new record for the most sixes hit in the powerplay in a single IPL season, going past Abhishek Sharma to reach 30 powerplay sixes for the tournament.

A Record That Tells You Everything

Thirty powerplay sixes in a single IPL season. Before this year, nobody had ever reached that number. Abhishek Sharma, one of the most destructive opening batters in the competition’s recent history, held the previous record. The fact that a 15-year-old has bettered it, and has done so while playing the entire season, not just picking his spots, tells you everything you need to know about how naturally Sooryavanshi understands the role of an attacking T20 opener. He does not wait for a bad ball. He goes after every ball he faces.

The Journey That Got Him Here

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s rise has been extraordinary. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar at just 12, then became the youngest player to earn an IPL contract when Rajasthan Royals signed him at the 2025 mega auction. A year later, at just 14, he stunned the cricket world with a 101 off 38 balls against Gujarat Titans, becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history with the second-fastest IPL hundred ever. Earlier in 2026, he also led India’s Under-19 side to World Cup glory and finished as Player of the Tournament after blasting 175 off 80 balls in the final against England.

The IPL 2026 Season in Numbers

In the current campaign, Sooryavanshi has scored 404 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 237.64, placing him fifth in the Orange Cap standings. More than the runs, it is the manner in which he scores that makes him different. He has three half-centuries this season, two of which came in just 15 balls, making him joint-fastest with Abhishek Sharma for half-centuries in IPL 2026. He also scored his second IPL century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a 103 off 37 balls that included 12 maximums, the most sixes by an Indian batter in a single IPL innings.

His Impact Even in Defeat

Against Gujarat Titans on Friday, Rajasthan were eventually bowled out for 152 in 16.3 overs and lost by 77 runs. But even in that defeat, Sooryavanshi’s cameo mattered. He smashed 36 off 16 balls with three fours and three sixes, keeping up with a chase that required 230. It was Mohammed Siraj who finally dismissed him, but not before the teenager had given Rajasthan’s run rate every chance. Even his short innings carry consequence and record-breaking moments. He now sets the tone for whatever follows him in the batting order, and opponents know they need to get him out early or accept the damage.

Why He Will Be Central to India’s Future

Beyond the IPL, Sooryavanshi is being talked about as the kind of generational talent that comes along once every decade or so. The India Under-19 World Cup win in early 2026 showed he has the temperament for knockout cricket, not just the flair. His 175 in the final against England showed he can sustain an innings over a long period and not just go out there swinging. Former players have already begun the debate about when, not if, he plays for the senior India T20 side. Some believe it could happen before the end of 2026.

The Teenager Who Does Not Know His Own Limits

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Sooryavanshi is that he does not seem to register the pressure of expectation. He arrived in IPL 2025 as the youngest ever debutant in the league’s history and hit a six off his very first ball. That tells you something about how he is wired. Records, expectations, and history seem to motivate him rather than weigh him down. In a tournament that already has several world-class destructive batters, a 15-year-old from Bihar is keeping pace with all of them and regularly lapping them when it comes to six-hitting and strike rates. The IPL has never quite seen anything like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi before.
