CSK vs LSG: What to Expect at Chepauk

The Sunday Showdown

Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants meet at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday afternoon in what promises to be a fascinating clash of contrasting needs and styles. Kick-off is at 3:30 PM IST and the stakes could not be more different for the two camps. CSK are chasing a playoff spot and have real momentum behind them. LSG, meanwhile, are all but eliminated from contention and will be playing for nothing but pride and some late-season confidence building.

Where CSK Stand Heading In

Chennai sit sixth on the IPL 2026 points table with 10 points from 10 games and five wins. After a slow and disappointing start to the season, they have turned things around significantly in recent weeks. Sanju Samson has been the biggest reason for that. He has scored two centuries this campaign, including a 115 not out against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk, and currently sits among the top six run-scorers in the league. Ruturaj Gaikwad has contributed 251 runs in 10 matches including two half-centuries, providing Samson with the ideal partner at the top. The bowling unit, led by Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad, has been outstanding.

LSG Have Very Little Left to Play For

Lucknow arrive in Chennai in dismal shape. They have won only three from their ten matches and their net run rate is the second-worst in the competition. A mathematical miracle could still keep them alive but the numbers would need to line up perfectly, and realistically, this feels like a dead rubber for them in terms of playoffs. That said, LSG do have dangerous individual players who can turn a game on any given day. Rishabh Pant remains a wildcard batsman, Mitchell Marsh leads their run-scoring charts with 367 runs this season, and Mohammed Shami is capable of blowing any lineup apart with the new ball.

Why Chepauk Changes Everything

This match is being played in the afternoon on a red-soil pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, and that context matters enormously. The afternoon surface in Chennai is traditionally slow and dry, offering significant assistance to spinners. Unlike evening games where dew can take the bite out of spin bowling, there is no dew factor here whatsoever. CSK have arguably the two best spinners in the competition in Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein, and both have excellent records against LSG’s top and middle order batters. The Chepauk crowd in full voice for a CSK home game will also act as an effective twelfth player throughout the contest.

Samson and the Role He Needs to Play

The key for CSK will be Sanju Samson batting deep into the innings. Statistics from this season show that when Samson gets through the powerplay without getting out, CSK have won all four such matches. When he fails to do so, they have managed just one win from six. That dependency sounds concerning but it also reflects how transformative his presence is at the top of the order. If he stays in, the scoring rate stays high and the pressure stays entirely on the opposition bowlers. For LSG, early wickets against Samson are the single most important thing they can achieve in the first six overs.

Mohammed Shami’s Role Will Be Crucial

Mohammed Shami is the joint-fourth-highest wicket-taker in the powerplay this season with seven wickets and has a strong historical record against Ruturaj Gaikwad. He has bowled Gaikwad out without giving up a run in their head-to-head battles in the IPL. However, Samson has absolutely belted Shami over the years, scoring 82 runs from 43 balls against him for just one dismissal. These individual battles within the match will go a long way to deciding which team gets the upper hand in the first six overs.

Rain Was a Concern But Forecast Looks Clear

Both teams cancelled their pre-match practice sessions due to rain on Saturday, which raised concerns about the surface being damp and potentially helping the seamers more than expected. However, the forecast for Sunday shows clear skies and temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius. The zero rain probability is good news for a match that needs all 40 overs. The heat will be brutal for fielders and batters alike, but both squads are accustomed to playing in extreme Chennai conditions and should be fully prepared for it.

The MS Dhoni Question Lingers in the Background

One conversation that will follow this match regardless of what happens on the field is the continuing mystery around MS Dhoni. He has not played a single game in IPL 2026 due to a calf injury that has now recurred multiple times during training. Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel that CSK’s current combination would be disrupted if Dhoni returned, but left open the possibility of a farewell game if CSK fall out of playoff contention. With today’s match being a potential stepping stone toward the playoffs, the hope for a Chepauk farewell for Dhoni remains alive, for now.
