Jason Holder Stars as GT Beat RCB in IPL 2026 Match 42

Gujarat Titans Dominate at Home in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Titans and Jason Holder delivered a composed and clinical performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 30 as they beat defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru by four wickets in Match 42 of IPL 2026. The win brought GT their fifth victory of the season and pushed their points tally to 10, strengthening their case for a playoff berth.

Gujarat Titans won the toss and chose to field first, a decision that turned out to be the right one on a pitch that offered something for the bowlers in the early overs. RCB came in with full confidence as the second-placed side in the standings but were unable to assert their usual dominance with the bat.

Virat Kohli Sets the Tone Early Before Rabada Strikes Back

Virat Kohli started in his trademark attacking style, hammering Kagiso Rabada for four consecutive fours in the second over and then charging at Mohammed Siraj to deposit him over mid-on. For a few overs, it looked like RCB were about to post a massive total. However, when Kohli attempted to charge at Rabada again in the fourth over, the South African quick responded with a short delivery that drew a top edge to midwicket, ending a dangerous innings of 28.

With Kohli gone, RCB lost their way and were never able to build the kind of substantial partnerships that their batting lineup is capable of producing. Jason Holder was the central figure in the GT bowling attack, involved in five dismissals across the innings through a combination of wickets and catches at various positions around the field.

Jason Holder Controls the Match With Bat and Ball

Devdutt Padikkal top-scored for RCB with a bright 40 off 24 balls before Rashid Khan had him chopping on. The rest of the middle order came and went in rapid succession, and despite Venkatesh Iyer arriving as an impact player late in the innings, RCB were bowled out for just 155 in 19.2 overs. Arshad Khan took three wickets for 22 runs while Rashid Khan chipped in with two key dismissals. Holder was the glue that held the bowling effort together, providing support from every angle.

The target of 156 seemed well within GT’s reach, but they had their own wobble in the chase. Shubman Gill came out blazing, smashing Hazlewood for three fours and two sixes in a 24-run over to score 43 off just 18 balls before being caught at short cover by a sharp Kohli. Jos Buttler then took over the acceleration, hitting 39 off 19 balls before losing his wicket to Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the eighth over.

GT Survive Wobble to Chase Down Target With Ease

At various stages, GT found themselves in a tricky position with wickets falling at inconvenient moments. Romario Shepherd dismissed both Washington Sundar and Shahrukh Khan in a single over to bring the required rate back into focus. But Holder’s composed 12 off 10 balls and Rahul Tewatia’s unbeaten 27 off 17 balls as the impact player guided GT over the line with 25 balls to spare, completing the four-wicket victory.

Holder, named Player of the Match, reflected on the performance with quiet satisfaction, noting that the team’s energy had been strong from the start of the match. It was a collective effort that showcased GT’s all-round depth. The win also handed GT a degree of revenge from an earlier defeat to RCB in the competition.

RCB Remain Second Despite Third Loss

For RCB, this was their third defeat of the season in nine games, but they continue to hold second place with 12 points. Their net run rate did take a noticeable hit after GT chased down the total in just 15.5 overs, which could matter when playoff positions are decided. With the race to the top four intensifying, every run and every over is going to count in the final stretch of the league stage. RCB will need to refocus quickly as they face more tough opponents in the coming weeks.

GT now sit fifth in the standings but are only two points behind fourth-placed Rajasthan Royals. Their campaign has quietly gathered momentum and they are emerging as one of the more dangerous teams heading into the business end of the tournament.
