Abhishek Sharma’s 22-Ball Blitz, SRH Crush CSK

Sunrisers Hyderabad are making a statement. In a high-octane Southern Derby at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 18, SRH beat Chennai Super Kings by 10 runs to move into the top four of the IPL 2026 points table. It was a comprehensive performance explosive with the bat, disciplined with the ball and it had Abhishek Sharma’s fingerprints all over it.

The Abhishek Sharma Problem For Everyone Else

Let’s be honest: when Abhishek Sharma is in the mood, there is very little any bowling attack in the world can do about it. The left-hander strode out to open on April 18 and immediately made it clear he was in one of those moods. He hammered his way to 59 off just 22 balls a strike rate of 268.18 with six fours and four sixes. His fifty came off 15 balls, which is the kind of milestone that stops commentary teams mid-sentence.

SRH’s approach was predictably aggressive. Travis Head joined Abhishek at the top, and the two put on a powerplay that had the home crowd trembling. They smashed 15 runs off Anshul Kamboj in the fifth over alone, signaling their intent early. Head eventually departed for 23 off 20 balls, while captain Ishan Kishan followed for a golden duck a double blow that CSK needed. But by then, the damage was already in motion.

Jamie Overton Gets the Big Fish

The 22nd over of his innings, the eighth of the match, saw Jamie Overton produce a moment of genuine skill. He induced a faint edge off Abhishek’s bat and CSK reviewed and got their man. That wicket, and another by Overton in the next over dismissing Aniket Verma for two, briefly brought CSK back into the equation. Overton finished with 3 for 37 a fine haul on a surface that was offering batters plenty.

But SRH had another ace up their sleeve.

Klaasen Holds the Fort

Heinrich Klaasen walked in amid the mini-collapse and did what great batters do he understood the situation and adapted. He did not try to replicate Abhishek’s madness. Instead, Klaasen played with calculated aggression, brought up his 10th IPL fifty off 33 deliveries, and guided SRH to a total of 194 for 9. His 59 off 39 balls was the backbone the innings needed after the top-order mayhem. Anshul Kamboj eventually got him in the 18th over, but by then 194 was already on the board a total that felt tricky on that surface.

The Chase: CSK’s Story of Almost

Chennai’s reply was compelling viewing. CSK are not a team that gives up easily, and there were moments in the chase when it looked like the five-time champions were going to pull off something special.

Ayush Mhatre came out blazing 30 off 13 balls, with five fours and a six. It was the kind of powerplay knock CSK needed. Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan stitched together 46 runs off 33 balls to keep the asking rate manageable. At the midway point, CSK were well in the game. But wickets kept falling at crucial junctures, and the middle order couldn’t quite sustain the pressure the asking rate demanded.

Eshan Malinga was the key bowler for SRH. The young Sri Lankan pacer finished with 3 for 29, including the crucial wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad off the very first ball of the innings a dismissal that set the tone for CSK’s chase. Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 2 for 31, and Praful Hinge held his nerve in the death to give CSK 10 more runs than they could afford to concede. CSK finished on 184 for 8 a fine total in any other context, but 10 runs short in this one.

The Final Over Drama

CSK needed 41 runs from the final three overs a steep ask, but not impossible given the talent of Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj at the crease. The pair added 28 off 17 balls, which was brave but not quite enough. Praful Hinge bowled the final over with ice in his veins, defending 18 runs and picking up Overton in the process.

What SRH’s Win Tells Us

SRH are now on three wins in six games and are climbing the table. Their blueprint is clear Abhishek Sharma in full flow in the powerplay, Klaasen as the engine in the middle, and a bowling attack that can defend in the death. The pieces are coming together at the right time for Ishan Kishan’s side.

For CSK, this is their fourth defeat of the season. The playoff qualification picture is tightening, and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s men cannot afford too many more slip-ups. Their batting has runs in it, but the inability to close out games is becoming a pattern that needs urgent addressing.
