Ajit Agarkar on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s 2027 ODI World Cup Future: “Difficult To Say”

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has addressed ongoing speculation about the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2025, Agarkar clarified that no final decision has been made on the star duo’s inclusion, emphasizing that selection will depend on form, fitness, and team balance.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already retired from Test and T20I cricket but continue to feature in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Agarkar stated that while the two legends remain key members of the Indian setup, their participation in every series or future tournament is not guaranteed.

“They are incredible players, but it is not the forum to harp on about individual players. Two years from now, it is difficult to say what the situation will be,” said Ajit Agarkar.

The BCCI chief selector noted that India’s long-term strategy involves grooming the next generation of talent, ensuring that emerging players have the opportunity to prove themselves before the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“It’s about winning trophies, not just runs. Even if they score three hundreds in the Australia series, it doesn’t guarantee World Cup selection. We will assess the situation as it unfolds,” Agarkar explained.

At the same time, Agarkar acknowledged the importance of experienced campaigners like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whose presence continues to strengthen the dressing room and guide younger players.

“Legacy cricketers have earned their status. Their experience strengthens the side and deserves respect,” he added.

As the cricketing world debates the long-term roles of Rohit and Kohli in ODIs, Ajit Agarkar’s comments make it clear that team composition for the 2027 ODI World Cup will depend entirely on current performance, fitness, and strategic needs — not past achievements.
