Axar Patel on Shubman Gill Captaincy Transition: “It’s Ideal That Rohit and Virat Are Here to Support Him”

Axar Patel on Shubman Gill captaincy transition highlighted the perfect balance of experience and youth as India embarks on a new leadership phase. Ahead of the first ODI against Australia at the Optus Stadium, the nets reflected a symbolic passing of the torch — with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill batting together, marking the start of a new chapter in Indian cricket.

Gill, who made a strong impression as Test captain earlier this year with 754 runs at an average of 75.40 against England, now leads India’s ODI side. Even as he steps into a major leadership role, the presence of Rohit and Kohli remains invaluable — both for their experience and their ability to guide the next generation.

“All of this is part of a natural transition,” said Axar Patel during a press conference in Perth. “It’s ideal that Rohit bhai and Virat bhai are here to support Shubman. Their experience will help him grow as a captain. When senior and junior players play together, it helps everyone learn faster and perform better.”

Axar also spoke about the relaxed yet focused atmosphere in the Indian dressing room. Kohli, known for his intensity, has been seen joking with teammates — a reflection of mutual respect and healthy team spirit during this Shubman Gill captaincy transition.

The three-match ODI series against Australia is expected to be a key test of Gill’s leadership and India’s adaptability. It could also be a potential farewell tour for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on Australian soil.

Axar praised the senior duo’s fitness and form: “Both Rohit and Virat look in great shape. They’ve trained hard at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and passed all their fitness tests. Their rhythm during practice has been excellent.”

For Shubman Gill, this series is a defining opportunity to establish his leadership style and build a core team with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Meanwhile, Axar himself is set for a crucial role with both Ravindra Jadeja rested and Hardik Pandya injured. “I’m feeling confident,” Axar said. “The team trusts me now, and I’m ready to deliver match-winning performances.”

As India transitions under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, the presence of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ensures the process remains smooth — blending experience, mentorship, and youthful energy for a stronger future.
