Gautam Gambhir Urges for Better Test Match Pitches After India’s Series Win

After India completed a 2-0 Test series victory against the West Indies, head coach Gautam Gambhir voiced his concern over the quality of pitches in recent matches — particularly the one used in Delhi. Although India sealed the win inside the first hour of Day 5, Gambhir said the surface didn’t offer enough assistance or carry for the fast bowlers.

India had opted for flatter tracks in both Ahmedabad and Delhi following a 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand, where spin dominated the contests. While the Ahmedabad pitch saw the West Indies collapse for 44.1 and 45.1 overs in two innings, the Delhi surface appeared even slower and less responsive.

“I felt the wicket could have been better,” Gambhir said after the match. “Even though we got the result on the fifth day, the pitch didn’t provide enough carry. Nicks should carry, and that’s something we need to work on.”

India’s bowlers toiled hard on the lifeless track, sending down a total of 200.4 overs in the match — with Bumrah bowling 31.5 overs and Siraj 24. While they managed to produce moments of brilliance, Gambhir stressed the importance of keeping both seamers and spinners in the game.

“There has to be something for the pacers too,” he added. “We always talk about spinners being key in India, but when you have two quality fast bowlers, you want them to be in the contest as well. The lack of bounce and carry was concerning.”

Gambhir emphasized that good pitches are essential to preserving the appeal of Test cricket. “If we want to keep Test cricket alive, we must play on quality surfaces that provide balance between bat and ball,” he concluded.

India’s next home Test, against South Africa in Kolkata starting November 14, is expected to draw attention to how pitch conditions evolve under these new expectations.
