Punjab Kings Sit Alone at the Top of the Table
After 42 matches of IPL 2026, the playoff Race picture is becoming clearer in some areas while remaining wonderfully uncertain in others. Punjab Kings lead the competition with 13 points from eight games and are widely regarded as the safest bet to finish in the top four. Their performances across all phases of the game have been the most consistent of any side in the tournament, and their net run rate of plus 1.043 gives them a healthy buffer.
Below PBKS, however, the race is as tight as it has been at this stage in recent seasons. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals are all on 12 points. The difference between them and any late charge from Gujarat Titans on 10 points makes the remaining matches feel like high-stakes knockout cricket in everything but name.
RCB’s Position is Strong But Not Guaranteed
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have the best net run rate in the competition at plus 1.420, which gives them a significant cushion even if they drop a result or two. However, their defeat to Gujarat Titans on April 30 was a reminder that they are not immune to bad days. Being dismissed for 155 by a disciplined GT attack was not what Rajat Patidar and his side needed, and the way the chase was completed with 25 balls to spare ensured their NRR took a hit.
The defending champions are still in a strong position and remain the team with arguably the most match-winners across all departments. But they cannot afford complacency, and the intensity with which teams have competed against them throughout the season suggests they will face tough tests in every remaining game.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Eye Top Spot After Strong Run
SRH have been in excellent form in recent weeks, and their win against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium earlier in the tournament was one of the performances of the season. Their aggressive batting philosophy has been on full display, with players throughout the lineup comfortable hitting from any position in any situation. They are genuine contenders not just for a playoff spot but for the title itself.
Their bowling has been the slight concern, but the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar continue to deliver in crucial moments. The purple cap race also features SRH bowlers prominently, which gives a sense of how balanced their attack has been despite appearances.
Gujarat Titans Mount a Late Challenge
Perhaps the most interesting development in the playoff race is GT‘s surge. With 10 points from nine games, Shubman Gill’s side are two points behind the third and fourth-placed teams and have played the same number of games as Rajasthan Royals. Back-to-back wins have lifted the mood inside the GT camp, and the all-round contributions from Holder, Rashid Khan and the rest of the squad suggest a team that is finding its best form at the right time.
GT’s remaining fixtures and their capacity to keep winning will determine whether they can muscle their way into the top four ahead of one of the more established sides. It is not impossible, and based on current form, it is arguably quite probable.
Middle and Lower Table Teams Running Out of Time
For teams like Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, the mathematics of the situation are becoming brutal. With multiple games still to play but a points gap that is growing, they need winning streaks alongside favourable results elsewhere. It is a scenario that demands everything from players and coaching staff alike, and the pressure in those dressing rooms will be building with every match that passes. The next ten days of IPL cricket will define several careers and season narratives in ways that will be talked about long after the tournament ends.
