IPL 2026 Playoffs Race: Three Teams Are In, Five Are Desperate for the Last Remaining Spot

The IPL 2026 playoff race has reached its most compelling and chaotic stage. Three teams have confirmed their places in the knockout phase. Royal Challengers Bengaluru sit at the top of the table as the first qualifier. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans joined them on May 18 by virtue of SRH’s five-wicket win over CSK at Chepauk. That leaves one remaining playoff spot, and at least five teams believe they still have the right to claim it.

The Three Teams Already Confirmed

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been the most consistent side in IPL 2026, and their leadership of the points table reflects a campaign of sustained quality. Their run to qualification was driven by Virat Kohli’s consistency and a bowling attack that has functioned with precision throughout the tournament. Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, have built momentum at exactly the right time, their second half of the league stage significantly stronger than their first. Sunrisers Hyderabad completed the top three on Monday night at Chepauk, with their batting depth and Pat Cummins’ leadership making them a dangerous outfit heading into the knockouts. Significantly, SRH’s qualification also removed pressure from their final game against RCB on May 22.

Five Teams, One Spot, Impossible Tension

The five teams in contention for the fourth and final playoff berth are Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders. Their situations are all markedly different. Punjab Kings are currently best placed among the chasing group. Delhi Capitals, energised by Mitchell Starc’s four-wicket demolition of RR on May 17, are very much alive with 12 points. Rajasthan Royals sit on 12 points with a must-win game tonight at Jaipur against Lucknow Super Giants. CSK have 12 points and one game left but need multiple results to break their way. KKR remain mathematically alive but their situation is the most precarious of the group.

The Mathematics That Will Decide Everything

The final round of league fixtures will be played in quick succession over the coming days. RR’s game tonight at Jaipur, CSK’s game against GT on May 21 at Ahmedabad, and DC’s final fixture will all interact with each other in ways that make the arithmetic genuinely complex. Net run rate will almost certainly be the deciding factor if two or more teams finish level on points, which means winning matches by large margins is as important right now as simply winning. Coaching staff across all five sides will be monitoring live scores from other venues and adjusting their in-game strategies accordingly.

What Each Team Needs to Qualify

Punjab Kings are in the strongest position among the chasing pack and need to win their final game to make the playoffs. Delhi Capitals need to beat their final opponent and hope teams around them drop points. Rajasthan Royals must win tonight against LSG and likely need a convincing margin to boost their net run rate, then hope that other results cooperate. For CSK, the ask is to win their final game against GT on May 21 and then watch an unlikely set of results unfold. KKR face the most daunting equation of all and need an extraordinary combination of results.

Why This Final Week Is Unmissable Cricket

There is nothing quite like the last round of a round-robin competition where multiple teams are still alive. Every boundary, every wicket, and every dot ball in the remaining IPL 2026 league fixtures will carry playoff weight. Players who have been quietly excellent all season will suddenly find themselves at the centre of history. The IPL 2026 season has delivered remarkable cricket from the very first week, and this final chapter promises to be the most dramatic of all.
