IPL 2026 Playoffs Schedule: Ahmedabad to Host Final on May 31

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially confirmed the playoff schedule for IPL 2026, bringing clarity to the final stretch of one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory. The tournament will conclude on May 31 with the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, a venue that has increasingly become the home of Indian cricket’s biggest occasions.

With the playoff race still wide open, the announcement has added even more anticipation to the final weeks of the league stage. Teams are battling not only for qualification but also for a top two finish, which could prove crucial in the road to the title.

Ahmedabad Confirmed as Final Venue

The Narendra Modi Stadium will host the IPL final for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The massive venue in Ahmedabad has already staged title clashes in 2022, 2023, and 2025, and it now adds the 2026 final to that growing list.

Originally, the final was expected to be played at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Since Royal Challengers Bengaluru entered the season as defending champions, the idea of hosting the final there seemed fitting. However, the BCCI later confirmed that the venue arrangement could not move forward because certain local association requirements fell outside the board’s established operational guidelines.

Reports from IANS indicated that discussions involving complimentary passes for officials and association members became one of the sticking points during negotiations. With no agreement reached, the BCCI shifted focus quickly and finalized Ahmedabad as the replacement venue.

The decision also drew public reaction from Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, though the BCCI has shown no indication of revisiting the change.

Why Narendra Modi Stadium Remains the Preferred Choice

From the BCCI’s perspective, Ahmedabad remains the safest and most practical option for a major event. The Narendra Modi Stadium can accommodate more than 100,000 spectators, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world. That scale gives organizers flexibility in crowd management, security, logistics, and ticket demand.

The stadium has also become familiar with hosting global events under pressure. It staged the 2023 ODI World Cup final and earlier this year hosted the 2026 T20 World Cup final. Those experiences strengthened its reputation as a venue capable of handling cricket’s biggest nights without complications.

For fans, the atmosphere in Ahmedabad has consistently delivered memorable IPL moments. Packed crowds, high scoring games, and dramatic finishes have made it one of the league’s marquee destinations.

Full IPL 2026 Playoff Schedule

The playoff stage will feature four knockout matches spread across three different venues. The structure remains the same as previous seasons, rewarding teams that finish in the top two positions during the league stage.

Qualifier 1 will take place on May 26 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. The top two teams on the points table will face each other, with the winner securing a direct place in the final. The losing side will still have another opportunity to qualify.

The Eliminator is scheduled for May 27 at the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The teams finishing third and fourth will meet in a knockout clash where the loser is immediately eliminated from the tournament.

Qualifier 2 will also be played in New Chandigarh on May 29. The loser of Qualifier 1 will face the winner of the Eliminator, with the victor advancing to the final.

The IPL 2026 final is then set for May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Using three venues for the playoff phase is relatively uncommon in IPL history. The BCCI described it as a special arrangement for the 2026 season because of operational and logistical planning across a packed tournament calendar.

The Race for the Top Four Is Still Wide Open

Even with the playoff schedule confirmed, the teams participating are still far from decided. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings currently appear strongest in the race for the top two positions, which would guarantee them a place in Qualifier 1 and provide an extra chance to reach the final.

Behind them, the battle is becoming increasingly intense. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans remain tightly grouped in the standings, while Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders still have mathematical hopes of qualification.

Every remaining league match now carries enormous significance. A single victory could move a team into the top four, while one defeat could end a campaign entirely.

Countdown to the Final Begins

The league stage concludes on May 24, meaning fans will soon know which four teams are travelling to Dharamshala and New Chandigarh for the knockout rounds. From there, the focus will shift fully toward Ahmedabad and what promises to be another massive IPL final.

Given how unpredictable IPL 2026 has been so far, the final weeks of the season are expected to deliver even more drama. Several teams remain capable of winning the title, individual players are producing career-best performances, and pressure is beginning to shape every decision on the field.

If the intensity of the league stage is any indication, the IPL 2026 final on May 31 could become one of the most memorable endings the tournament has seen in years.
