Jos Buttler Fires Back with Blazing Century to Keep RR Alive

Buttler Reminds Everyone Why He Is World Class

There are players who perform well consistently, and then there are players who produce something extraordinary when it matters most. Jos Buttler belongs firmly in the second category. The Rajasthan Royals captain walked out to bat in a must-win situation against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday evening and proceeded to play one of the most complete T20 innings of IPL 2026, scoring 112 not out off just 58 balls to power RR to a seven-wicket victory that keeps their playoff hopes very much alive.

The Royals needed 194 to win after SRH posted a strong total on the back of a brilliant batting effort. Most teams would have found that target challenging. Buttler made it look straightforward.

A Chase That Defied Logic

Rajasthan Royals lost Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply in the second over, which is never an ideal start when you are chasing a big total. But Buttler is one of those players who becomes more focused when pressure arrives rather than less so. He played the powerplay with exceptional care, rotating the strike and waiting for the right balls to attack, reaching just 28 off 20 deliveries at the end of six overs.

Then, the middle overs happened. Buttler accelerated so dramatically that SRH’s bowling unit simply had no answer. He hit Shaheen Shah Afridi for consecutive sixes in the ninth over, a stunning display of power hitting that sent the crowd into a frenzy. By the time he reached his half century off 32 balls, it was clear this was going to be a special innings.

In the last five overs, Buttler was simply unstoppable. He hit six sixes and four fours during that phase, targeting both the fast bowlers and spinners with equal authority. His century came off 57 balls, with a pulled six over deep midwicket off Pat Cummins that crashed into the crowd.

Partnership with Riyan Parag

While Buttler was the star of the show, the 97-run partnership he shared with Riyan Parag cannot be overlooked. Parag, who has emerged as one of the most exciting young batters in Indian cricket over the past two years, played a perfectly judged supporting role. He scored 41 off 28 balls and kept the scoreboard moving during the periods when the opposition were targeting Buttler with two men on the boundary.

Parag’s cricket intelligence has developed noticeably. He no longer tries to match his captain shot for shot. Instead, he reads the situation, absorbs dot balls when needed, and accelerates at the right moments. It is a maturity that has made him a far more valuable player.

SRH Had Done Enough… Or So They Thought

Sunrisers Hyderabad were understandably confident after their innings. Heinrich Klaasen smashed 78 off 38 balls and Abhishek Sharma contributed 44 at the top of the order to push SRH to 193/5, a total that looked competitive on a surface that had been tricky in the first half. Travis Head, unfortunately, missed the game with a minor hamstring strain, but the rest of the SRH batting lineup compensated well.

Their bowling, however, struggled to contain Buttler once he found his rhythm. Cummins conceded 51 runs in his four overs, an unusually expensive return for one of the world’s best death bowlers.

RR Back in the Race

This win moves Rajasthan Royals to fifth place on the IPL 2026 points table, level on points with the teams occupying fourth position. With three games remaining, they are in a strong position to secure a playoff spot if they can maintain this form.

Buttler spoke after the match about the importance of backing himself during difficult moments and trusting the process that the team had built together throughout the season. He also paid tribute to the RR support staff for helping him fine-tune his game ahead of this match after a couple of quieter outings.

Rajasthan Royals’ next game comes against Punjab Kings in what promises to be a high-scoring thriller. If Buttler turns up in this form again, PBKS will need to score an extraordinary total to stay ahead of them.
