Marco Penge Race to Dubai Challenge After Shock Comeback From Ban

Marco Penge Race to Dubai — English golfer Marco Penge says he is “in disbelief” as he enters the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship alongside Rory McIlroy, with a real chance of capturing the Race to Dubai crown despite beginning the season with a suspension.

Penge’s Remarkable Rise After Suspension

The 27-year-old from Clitheroe, now one of Britain’s brightest golf prospects, began 2025 under a cloud after receiving a three-month ban for breaching betting regulations. An independent panel found that his wagers, which did not involve events he played in, “had not compromised the integrity” of competitions.

Penge served his suspension early in the season, then stormed back with three victories, including the Open de España, securing a Masters 2026 debut and a PGA Tour card for next year.

“To finish top 50 was my goal after being suspended,” Penge told BBC Sport. “Then I won in China, and everything changed. I’ve reset my goals four or five times this year.”

Rivalry With McIlroy and Hatton

Now Penge trails Rory McIlroy by fewer than 500 points in the Race to Dubai standings, with Tyrrell Hatton third. He will play alongside both Ryder Cup stars in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the penultimate event before the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

“Rory is the best player of my generation and someone my game is most similar to,” said Penge. “I’m a great driver of the ball and hit it far, so I’m excited to compare my game with his and see where I need to improve.”

From Suspension to Contention

Penge admits his rapid turnaround still feels surreal. “I still am in disbelief that I am in the position that I am,” he said. “Not because I don’t think I’m good enough, just because of how fast it’s happened.”

The Englishman’s consistent performances have earned him a spot among golf’s elite, challenging McIlroy’s bid for a record-equalling seventh Race to Dubai title.

“I look at it from a learning standpoint,” he explained. “If I go out trying to be too intense, it’ll just add pressure. I want to take it in stride and enjoy it.”

Focus Turns to the Middle East

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and DP World Tour Championship will decide who claims the season-long crown. For Penge, who only kept his tour card in the final event last year, the chance to win golf’s European Order of Merit marks a stunning turnaround — a journey from banned to contender in less than a year.
