India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has strongly defended his fitness ahead of the Mohammed Shami Ranji Trophy 2025 season, stating that his participation in domestic red-ball cricket proves he is fully match-ready. Speaking before Bengal’s opening Ranji fixture, Shami made it clear that if he is fit to play four-day cricket, he can easily handle the demands of 50-over matches.
Shami, who last represented India during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, was excluded from the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. Addressing his omission, he told PTI,
“Selection is not in my hands. If there’s a fitness issue, I shouldn’t be here playing for Bengal. If I can play four-day cricket, I can also play 50-over cricket.”
The 35-year-old pacer, known for his consistent swing and seam movement, emphasized that his focus is on performance rather than public perception.
“It’s my job to train at the NCA and perform in matches. Giving updates isn’t my responsibility — my performance should speak for itself,” he said.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had previously stated that Shami’s exclusion was due to limited first-class appearances in recent years. However, Mohammed Shami Ranji Trophy 2025 marks his determined comeback effort. Having bowled 30 overs during IPL 2025 and played in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone, Shami has shown his commitment to staying match-ready.
“I believe in staying prepared. If the selectors call, I’ll be ready. Until then, I’ll play for Bengal and keep improving,” Shami said.
The fast bowler also urged young cricketers to value the Ranji Trophy, calling it the foundation of Indian cricket.
“Earlier, playing Ranji was a big deal. Nowadays, players treat it as a step down, but I don’t agree. You must play four-day cricket to stay sharp,” he added.
Despite being out of international action, Mohammed Shami’s Ranji Trophy 2025 performances will be closely watched, as he continues to chase another India comeback. His experience, accuracy, and fitness could yet make him a key part of India’s ODI plans leading into future series.
