Najmul Hossain Shanto Bangladesh Test Captain: Skipper Puts Country Before Self

Najmul Hossain Shanto Bangladesh Test captain — Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said he decided to return as Test captain because he believes the country’s cricket is bigger than any individual. Shanto, who had previously stepped down after the Sri Lanka series, reversed his decision following discussions with senior Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) figures.

Shanto Explains Change of Heart

Speaking to reporters in Sylhet ahead of the Test series against Ireland, starting November 11, Shanto revealed that advice from former BCB chairman and current vice-president Faruque Ahmed and national team director Abdur Razzak convinced him to resume leadership duties.

“When such senior officials and former cricketers of the BCB are giving advice, it is definitely for the good of the team and my own good as well,” Shanto said. “I felt I should prioritize Bangladesh cricket over myself as an individual. So, I put the team first and came back to this decision.”

Focus on Team Unity and Adaptability

Shanto emphasized that his return was based on constructive communication with the board. “We had healthy discussions about how to handle and prevent issues that might arise. Everyone was positive. I believe the BCB will fully support me moving forward,” he added.

The 25-year-old also addressed his initial concerns about Bangladesh’s three-captain system, saying he now supports the structure where Mehidy Hasan and Litton Das lead the ODI and T20I sides respectively. “I’m optimistic that no problems will occur. Our understanding is strong, and we communicate regularly about how to take Bangladesh cricket forward.”

Salahuddin’s Future and Team Environment

Shanto also spoke about the situation surrounding assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, who recently tendered his resignation citing personal reasons. “That is his personal decision, and I don’t know the details of his talks with the BCB,” said Shanto. “I hope both sides can have a good conversation.”

Despite reports of favouritism against Salahuddin, Shanto defended the coach: “He tries to treat every cricketer equally and gives priority based on ability and performance. Not everything people say outside is true.”

Commitment to Bangladesh Cricket

By returning as captain until the end of the current ICC World Test Championship cycle, Shanto reaffirmed his dedication to guiding Bangladesh cricket forward. “Bangladesh cricket is much bigger than me. The needs of the team outweigh any personal feelings,” he concluded.
