Pakistan Tri-Series 2025: Zimbabwe Replaces Afghanistan After ACB’s Withdrawal

The Pakistan Tri-Series 2025 has undergone a major change, with Zimbabwe officially replacing Afghanistan following the latter’s withdrawal from the tournament. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the update on Wednesday, announcing that the T20I tri-series — featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and now Zimbabwe — will take place from November 17 to 29 across Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Afghanistan Withdraws After Tragic Incident

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced that the team would not participate in the Pakistan Tri-Series 2025 due to a tragic incident that deeply impacted the nation’s cricketing community. Three Afghan cricketers reportedly lost their lives in an alleged cross-border attack in Urgun district while returning home from a friendly match in Paktika province.

In an emotional statement on X (formerly Twitter), the ACB said, “The ACB considers this a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family.” The board clarified that the withdrawal was made “as a gesture of respect to the victims.”

Following the incident, several cricket boards, including the ICC and BCCI, extended their condolences and support to Afghanistan’s cricket fraternity.

PCB Confirms Zimbabwe’s Inclusion

While the PCB refrained from commenting on the details surrounding Afghanistan’s withdrawal, it swiftly confirmed Zimbabwe’s inclusion in the tri-series to ensure the event proceeds as planned.

The updated Pakistan Tri-Series 2025 schedule will open with Pakistan vs Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi, followed by Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka two days later at the same venue. The remaining fixtures will move to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where the final will also be played.

Zimbabwe Steps Up for Pakistan Tri-Series 2025

For Zimbabwe cricket, this participation offers a timely opportunity to face two top-tier Asian sides — Pakistan and Sri Lanka — ahead of next year’s major ICC events. Led by pacer Blessing Muzarabani and a developing batting core, the Zimbabwe team will look to use the Pakistan Tri-Series 2025 as a platform to rebuild confidence and gain valuable T20I experience.

Their inclusion also maintains the spirit of the tri-series, ensuring continued international engagement and preparation for all participating teams.
