RCB Storm Back to the Top with Clinical Win Over LSG

Royal Challengers Bengaluru delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, brushing aside Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 15. The win was not just convincing in margin, but dominant in every phase of the game, as RCB chased down the target with nearly five overs remaining. From incisive new-ball bowling to a commanding batting display led by Virat Kohli, this was a statement victory that reasserted their position as serious contenders in IPL 2026.

Patidar’s Call Sets the Tone

Rajat Patidar made the right decision at the toss, opting to bowl first on a surface that offered early assistance to seamers. The pitch had a hint of moisture and uneven bounce, and RCB’s bowlers exploited those conditions expertly from the outset. Josh Hazlewood struck early to apply pressure, but it was Rasikh Salam Dar who truly turned the game in RCB’s favour.

The young pacer produced a spell full of control and variation, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 24. He consistently troubled the LSG batters with movement off the seam and clever changes in pace, dismantling both the top and middle order. His spell ensured that Lucknow never found any rhythm in their innings.

LSG Struggle Amid Early Setbacks

Lucknow Super Giants were dealt a major blow in the powerplay when captain Rishabh Pant was struck on the elbow by a sharp Hazlewood delivery. Forced to retire hurt, Pant later returned but was clearly uncomfortable, managing just a brief stay at the crease. His inability to continue properly also affected LSG behind the stumps, adding to their struggles.

Despite the early damage, Aiden Markram attempted to stabilize the innings with a composed 40 off 32 balls. Ayush Badoni added some urgency with 38 from 24 deliveries, while Mukul Choudhary chipped in with 39 off 28. However, the lack of meaningful partnerships meant LSG could not build any sustained momentum. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and the innings never recovered from the early blows inflicted by RCB’s bowlers.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar maintained tight lines to keep the pressure intact, while Krunal Pandya added to the dominance by claiming his 100th IPL wicket. LSG were eventually bowled out for 146, a total that always looked below par on a ground known for high-scoring encounters.

Kohli’s Impact Changes the Game

Chasing 147, RCB approached the target with clarity and aggression. Virat Kohli, introduced as an impact substitute, immediately shifted the momentum in RCB’s favour. He took control during the powerplay, playing with intent and precision to put the bowlers under pressure.

Kohli raced to 40 off just 20 balls, showcasing his range with crisp drives and authoritative pulls. His knock of 49 from 34 deliveries ensured that RCB got off to a flying start, effectively taking the game away from LSG within the first six overs. By the end of the powerplay, RCB were well ahead of the required rate and firmly in command.

Rajat Patidar complemented Kohli’s aggression with a quickfire 27 off 13 balls, maintaining the tempo and preventing any chance of a comeback. Jitesh Sharma then delivered a brief but explosive cameo, smashing 23 off just 9 deliveries to further accelerate the chase.

With the target well within reach, Tim David and Romario Shepherd calmly guided the team home. RCB completed the chase in just 15.1 overs, underlining the ease with which they dominated the contest.

RCB Rise, LSG Face Questions

This victory propelled RCB back to the top of the IPL 2026 points table, with four wins from five matches and an impressive net run rate of 1.503. The result highlighted the balance in their squad, with both batting and bowling units performing in sync at a crucial stage of the tournament.

For Lucknow Super Giants, the loss exposed ongoing concerns with their batting lineup. Despite contributions from a few players, the lack of consistency and inability to form partnerships continue to hinder their progress. Their net run rate dropped further, leaving them in the lower half of the standings and in need of quick improvements.

RCB, meanwhile, look increasingly settled. Their new-ball attack has become a major strength, and with Kohli adapting effectively to the impact player role, the team appears well-equipped for the challenges ahead. If they maintain this level of performance, they will remain one of the strongest contenders as the tournament progresses.
