Sai Sudharsan’s 87 off 46 Destroys CSK as Gujarat Titans Win by 8 Wickets

Sai Sudharsan Silences Chepauk

Sai Sudharsan delivered one of the standout performances of IPL 2026 as Gujarat Titans outclassed Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets at the M Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, April 26. In what turned out to be a one-sided contest, Gujarat chased down a target of 159 with remarkable ease, finishing the job in just 16.4 overs and climbing to fifth place on the points table.

The Chepauk surface, often known for assisting spinners, behaved unpredictably and caught the home side off guard. While Chennai struggled to adapt, Gujarat read the conditions perfectly from the outset and executed their plans with precision. The result not only boosted GT’s playoff hopes but also exposed recurring weaknesses in CSK’s batting unit.

Rabada Sets the Platform

After winning the toss, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill opted to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. Kagiso Rabada led the charge with a fiery opening spell, dismantling Chennai’s top order and setting the tone for the innings. His figures of 3 for 25 in four overs reflected both control and aggression, as he consistently troubled the batters with pace and bounce.

Rabada struck early to remove key wickets, including Sanju Samson, leaving CSK reeling at 28 for 3 within the powerplay. The pressure didn’t ease as Chennai endured a prolonged dry spell, going 31 deliveries without finding the boundary between overs 3.5 and 9.1. That phase proved decisive, effectively halting any momentum the hosts hoped to build.

Arshad Khan provided strong support with two wickets of his own, while Mohammed Siraj maintained relentless accuracy, ensuring that CSK never recovered. Gujarat’s bowling unit operated as a cohesive force, exploiting the conditions far better than their opponents.

Gaikwad Fights Alone

Amid the collapse, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad stood tall with a composed and determined innings. He anchored the innings with an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls, showcasing patience and technical discipline on a challenging surface. However, his effort lacked support from the other end, as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Gaikwad’s innings included 30 dot balls, highlighting the difficulty of scoring freely on the pitch. While he attempted to stabilize the innings, the lack of partnerships prevented CSK from building any real momentum. Late contributions from Kartik Sharma and Jamie Overton added some respectability to the total, pushing it to 158 for 7 by the end of 20 overs.

After the match, Gaikwad admitted that the pitch behaved differently than expected, with more pace and bounce than usual. The misreading of conditions played a crucial role in CSK’s underwhelming batting performance.

Sudharsan Takes Centre Stage

If Chennai struggled to cope with the surface, Sai Sudharsan made it look like a completely different pitch. Opening the innings for Gujarat, he displayed a perfect blend of aggression and composure, taking control of the chase from the very beginning.

Sudharsan and Gill stitched together a 58-run opening partnership, laying a solid foundation. After Gill departed for 33, Sudharsan continued his dominance, forming a match-winning 97-run stand with Jos Buttler. The left-hander’s stroke play was both clean and confident, as he found boundaries with ease and kept the required rate well under control.

He eventually fell for a brilliant 87 off 46 balls, an innings decorated with seven sixes and four boundaries. His dismissal, courtesy of a sharp catch by Dewald Brevis, was one of the few highlights for CSK in an otherwise difficult outing. Buttler remained unbeaten on 39, guiding Gujarat to a comfortable victory.

This knock marked Sudharsan’s second successive major contribution, following a century in the previous match. His form has been a massive boost for Gujarat, establishing him as one of the most consistent and dangerous batters of the season.

Playoff Picture Sharpens

The win propelled Gujarat Titans to fifth place with eight points from eight matches, keeping them firmly in the playoff race. Their balanced lineup, featuring a potent bowling attack and in-form batters, makes them a serious contender as the tournament progresses.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, slipped to sixth after their fifth loss in eight games. Their struggles at the top of the order have become a recurring issue, raising concerns as the league stage enters a crucial phase. The subdued atmosphere at Chepauk reflected the growing frustration among fans.

For Gujarat, the focus now shifts to maintaining consistency in the remaining matches. With players like Rabada, Siraj, and Rashid Khan in their ranks, they possess the firepower to challenge any opposition. If their key players continue to perform, they are well-positioned to push for a playoff spot.

Kagiso Rabada was deservedly named Player of the Match for his match-defining spell, which laid the foundation for Gujarat’s dominant win.
