Gautam Gambhir Calls for More Bounce and Carry on Indian Test Pitches

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged for Test pitches in India to offer more bounce and carry, emphasizing the need to maintain a fair balance between bat and ball. His comments came after India’s seven-wicket win over West Indies in the second Test, where bowlers had to toil hard across 200 overs to secure the result.

After suffering a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand last year, India’s approach to pitch preparation has evolved — shifting from turning tracks to more balanced surfaces. While the Ahmedabad pitch aided bowlers, the Delhi surface required extra effort to claim 20 wickets.

“We got the result on day five, but the surface lacked carry. Fast bowlers need to stay in the game too,” Gambhir said post-match. “To keep Test cricket alive, we must play on good, sporting pitches.”

Gambhir also praised the West Indies’ fightback, saying their resistance in the Delhi Test was encouraging for world cricket. “The world needs West Indian cricket. It was great to see them fight back,” he added.

The victory marked another success for Shubman Gill, who secured his first Test series win as captain. Having already drawn 2-2 in England earlier this year, Gill’s leadership continues to impress Gambhir.

“No one has done him a favour by appointing him captain,” Gambhir said. “He deserves it. His work ethic, commitment, and attitude are outstanding. The way he’s handled himself and the team shows his leadership quality.”

Looking ahead, India will tour Australia for limited-overs matches before hosting South Africa for a full series. Gambhir highlighted the importance of domestic cricket for red-ball players in maintaining rhythm between international fixtures.

“Playing Ranji Trophy before Test series is crucial,” he explained. “Rather than just training at NCA, players should prepare through match practice. That’s what professionalism is all about.”

As India continue their World Test Championship journey, Gambhir’s call for lively wickets reflects a desire to keep both batsmen and bowlers equally involved, ensuring the long-format game thrives in home conditions.
