Keshav Maharaj India series: South Africa star warns Shubman Gill

Keshav Maharaj India series — South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has issued a strong warning ahead of the India vs South Africa Test series, declaring that the Proteas have a “real hunger and desire” to defeat India in India after 15 years. The two-match series begins November 14 in Kolkata and Guwahati.

South Africa’s Real Hunger to Beat India in India

Maharaj said that South Africa view this as one of their toughest tours, and they are motivated to end their long winless run on Indian soil. “There’s a real hunger and desire within the camp to beat India in India. It’s one of the toughest tours in our calendar,” Maharaj said in a media interaction.

He emphasized that the team wants to “grade themselves” against one of the world’s strongest Test sides, adding that the Proteas have “started to conquer other parts of the subcontinent.”

Keshav Maharaj on Pitches and Spin Conditions in India

When asked about pitch conditions, Maharaj downplayed expectations of rank turners. “I don’t think it will be as spin-friendly as in Pakistan,” he said. “It will be good wickets that deteriorate gradually—more traditional Test pitches.”

He also referenced the West Indies series, where matches lasted till day five, suggesting a shift toward balanced surfaces.

Maharaj vs India’s Spin Threat – Key Battle for the Series

South Africa struggled against R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in their last two tours, but Maharaj believes his side is better prepared this time. “India are a wonderful team and have come a long way, especially with their transition,” he said.

Momentum From Pakistan Series Fuels South Africa’s Confidence

Maharaj highlighted how their performance in Pakistan has given the Proteas belief. “We are carrying momentum from the Pakistan series. Regardless of the toss, we’ll fight and try to force results in our way,” he noted.

The India vs South Africa Test series will also see Shubman Gill leading India for the first time in Tests on home soil.
