Shardul Thakur on Sarfaraz Khan India A Selection: ‘He Doesn’t Need It to Play International Cricket’

Shardul Thakur Questions Sarfaraz Khan India A Selection Snub

Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur has spoken out strongly on the ongoing Sarfaraz Khan India A selection debate, saying that the prolific Mumbai batter doesn’t need an India A game to prove his worth for international cricket.

Sarfaraz was surprisingly left out of the India A squad for the upcoming series against South Africa A, starting October 30 in Bengaluru — a decision that has sparked widespread criticism in Indian cricket circles.

Speaking ahead of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2025 clash against Chhattisgarh, Thakur said:

“Nowadays, for the India A side, selectors look for players they want to groom for international cricket. But I feel Sarfaraz doesn’t need an India A game to play international cricket. If he keeps scoring in the Ranji Trophy, he can walk straight into the Test side.”

Why the Sarfaraz Khan India A Selection Debate Matters

The Sarfaraz Khan India A selection issue highlights a larger concern about the domestic-to-international transition. Despite being one of India’s most consistent first-class performers in recent years, Sarfaraz continues to be overlooked at higher levels.

He last represented India during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and missed the West Indies Test series earlier this month due to injury. His exclusion from the India A vs South Africa A series has, therefore, left many puzzled.

Thakur clarified that Sarfaraz was returning from an injury but insisted that his form remains solid.

“Before his injury, he scored multiple centuries in the Buchi Babu Trophy. Against Jammu & Kashmir in the last Ranji match, he made 40 before an unfortunate run-out. He’s in good touch — for him, India A is not essential,” said Thakur.

Sarfaraz Khan’s Proven Domestic Impact

Sarfaraz’s record in Ranji Trophy cricket is exceptional. He has consistently produced big knocks under pressure, often rescuing Mumbai from early batting collapses.

“He’s scored double centuries when Mumbai were two or three down early. That kind of temperament is rare. Whether he bats at No. 4 or 5, he delivers. Sarfaraz is one of those special players you can rely on,” Thakur added.

Thakur also acknowledged that while he leads the Mumbai team in the Ranji Trophy 2025, Sarfaraz’s hunger and consistency continue to set the benchmark for other domestic players.

What’s Next for Sarfaraz Khan After India A Selection Snub

With the India A vs South Africa A series approaching, Sarfaraz’s absence will remain a talking point. Yet, if he continues to dominate in domestic cricket, a return to the Indian Test team seems inevitable.

The ongoing Sarfaraz Khan India A selection controversy may just fuel his motivation to perform even better and prove that true match-winners don’t need another trial to earn their spot.
