Liverpool VAR Controversy: Reds Question PGMOL Call

Liverpool VAR controversy — Liverpool have contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to question the decision that ruled out Virgil van Dijk’s goal in their 3-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool Challenge Disallowed Goal Decision

Van Dijk’s header was disallowed after Andy Robertson was deemed to be impeding City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from an offside position. The on-field ruling by referee Chris Kavanagh was supported by VAR Michael Oliver, who determined Robertson’s movement interfered with play.

However, Liverpool dispute the call, arguing that Robertson did not obstruct Donnarumma’s view and that the offside law was misapplied. After reviewing multiple angles, the club believes the goal should have stood.

VAR and Offside Law Debate

The Premier League Match Centre explained that Robertson made an “obvious action” affecting the goalkeeper, but experts argue that an offside offense only applies if the action “clearly impacts” an opponent’s ability to play the ball.

A community note added on social media pointed out the inconsistency in the VAR interpretation, reigniting debate around officiating standards and VAR protocol.

Liverpool Seek Accountability

While accepting the result, Liverpool reached out to PGMOL chief Howard Webb to register their concerns. The club reportedly wants to ensure that similar officiating errors are avoided in future matches.

Van Dijk’s header, which would have leveled the score at 1-1, could have changed the match’s momentum before Manchester City went on to secure a dominant win.
